The Los Gatos-based nonprofit Plant-Based Advocates earned a certificate of commendation from Santa Clara County leaders and a community service award from the environmental nonprofit Acterra on March 21.
Both awards recognized the work the organization does to educate the public on the advantages of a plant-based diet. Since its inception in 2022, Plant-Based Advocates has hosted cooking classes and speaker events in conjunction with the Los Gatos Library in addition to regular tabling and outreach to the community.
Transitioning to a plant-based food system is vital to ensuring a sustainable future, group co-founder Karen Rubio said in a release. “We are at a critical juncture in humankind’s history,” she added. “Humans and their farm animals now make up 96% of the planet’s mammal biomass, crowding out entire ecosystems and wildlife.”
Creek Trail cleanup
Join the Los Gatos High School Key Club and Los Gatos Kiwanis Club for a trail cleanup along the Los Gatos Creek on April 13.
Volunteers will meet at the Old Forbes Mill parking lot behind 55 Church St. at 10 a.m.; the cleanup runs until 11:30 a.m. The clubs will provide garbage bags, gloves and other materials to help clean the trail, along with light snacks and coffee.
