OAKLAND — A developer is pushing forward with plans to bulldoze and redevelop a huge factory site in Oakland and build a modern logistics and industrial complex that would create hundreds of jobs.
A proposal to redevelop the shuttered Owens-Brockway glass manufacturing plant at 3600 Alameda Avenue in Oakland’s Fruitvale district is slated to be considered by the city’s Planning Commission this month.
The current plans call for the glass factory, which began operating in 1937, to be bulldozed and replaced with an industrial building totaling 430,000 square feet, the project plans show.
“The facility would be able to accommodate a variety of uses that may consist of manufacturing, research and development, warehousing, or industrial operations,” stated an environment impact report prepared by the Oakland planning staff.
In December 2021, Duke Realty, acting through an affiliate, paid $34.4 million for the 23.9-acre site, documents on file in Alameda County show.
Prologis, a real estate titan based in San Francisco, bought Duke Realty in 2022 through a $23 billion deal. As a result of that deal, Prologis is now leading the redevelopment effort of the former glass factory site.
Once completed, the project is poised to be a significant job creator for Oakland, the planning staffers stated.
“Project construction would involve temporary employees and the project would generate an estimated 350 permanent employees,” a city-prepared environmental impact report states.
