Two months after reports surfaced that Noah Cyrus had been seeing Dominic Purcell before the actor dated — and eventually married — her mother, Tish Cyrus, the 24-year-old singer acknowledged the shocking love trial for the first time this past weekend.
Actually, Noah Cyrus remarked on the family drama by slamming the person who brought it up on her Instagram account, Page Six reported. On a post that was captioned with “Dear lord, when i get in heaven please let me bring my man,” a lyric from Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful,” someone remarked, “Like that guy u and ur mom both have sexy time with?”
Cyrus hit back with an expletive-laced response that told the person to “choke” on a feature of male anatomy. The angry response is probably understandable, but so, too, is the fact that people are strangely fascinated with this particular sort of mother-daughter drama. After all, how weird is it for everyone involved in this family dynamic, and how common is it for mothers and daughters to be romantically involved with the same person, even if at different times?

A search of “love triangles with mothers and daughters” mostly turns up fictional triangles in day-time soap operas, telenovelas and movies, notably in “The Graduate” and in the 1983 teen rom-com, “Valley Girl,” which has a lurid triangle subplot. It looks like TikTok, not surprisingly, has become the place where people these days might share their real-life family triangles. For example, Cafe Mom reported in 2023 on a viral video posted by a young woman who revealed that her mother and ex-boyfriend are engaged — and that all three of them now live together.
“I guess to cover bases — yes, he’s my age,” the TikToker said in a post that was liked more than half a million times. “We dated in high school and to make it even spicier, he moved in with us a couple of months after he and I started dating. I was 16, engaged, and he lived with me, my mom, and my stepdad.”
Noah Cyrus hasn’t been so accommodating of her mother’s relationship with Purcell, according to Page Six. When her mother, 56, and the “Prison Break” star, 54, married in August 2023, Noah Cyrus and her older brother, Braison Cyrus, skipped out on the ceremony to go shopping at Walmart.
While their sister Miley Cyrus served as her mother’s maid of honor, Noah Cyrus posted a series of photos via Instagram Stories that showed her and her brother perusing the aisles inside one of the retail chain’s location in Los Angeles, Page Six said. She also shared a photo of herself and Braison enjoying a coffee at a cafe, captioning the post, “My brother flew here to see me!!”
At the time of the wedding, Noah and Braison Cyrus’ actions raised concerns about a family feud, with people online remarking on the siblings’ “shade” of their mother, and saying, “this family is a mess.” People assumed that the feud might have something to do with Noah Cyrus’s loyalty to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus. In August 2022, the country singer, 62, filed for divorce from Tish Cyrus after 28 years of marriage and five children together.
In March, People delivered the shocking news that Noah Cyrus and Purcell had been seeing each other before he started a romantic relationship with her mother. A source told people: “Noah and Dominic were seeing each other in a friends with benefits way, off and on. They stopped seeing each other and then Tish started something up,” the source said adding, “Tish knew he had been seeing Noah.”
The source also said that Noah Cyrus was offended that her mother married Purcell after she and the other had previously hooked up. The source also said, “Tish never gave Noah the chance to talk about all of this before they got married.”
