A bear was fatally shot by sheriff’s deputies after it tried to get into a school in Downieville, the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office said.

Wednesday’s encounter followed “escalating reports of bear break-ins” in the Sierra Nevada community, along Highway 49 about 40 miles northwest of Truckee.
“Since early May, the Sheriff’s Office has been inundated with daily reports from distressed homeowners and business owners regarding bears breaking into residences and vehicles, creating havoc and endangering local residents,” the sheriff’s report said.
A trap had been set in an attempt to capture a bear near a home that it had broken into, but on Wednesday a bear reportedly tried to get into the gymnasium at Downieville School and deputies decided to take immediate action.
After leaving the school, the bear reportedly broke into a home, where it was confronted by the resident, and then tried to get into another home. At that point, it was shot by deputies.
The statement from Sheriff Michael Fisher expressed “deep regret over the necessity of this action.”
