Saratoga Foothill Club honors veterans for 97th year

Congratulations and a big thank you to the Saratoga Foothill Club for organizing Saratoga’s annual Memorial Day celebration. For 97 years the ladies of the club have brought community groups together to honor those who died in service to our country. This historic ceremony continues Monday May 27, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Blaney Plaza, with a walk up Oak Street to Madronia Cemetery, where Girl Scouts will place laurel branches on each of the 1,353 veterans’ graves there.

All veterans in attendance will be honored, and past and current elected Saratoga officials will be recognized.

“This is the perfect opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and honor those who gave their lives for our country and those that are currently serving in the armed forces,” said Foothill Club president Nancy Miller, who thanked community groups like the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of America, El Sereno 4-H Club, and the Los Gatos chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution for their participation.

Miller has a special reason to be proud of this year’s ceremony: Her daughter, Col. Laura Miller, will be the keynote speaker. Laura grew up in Saratoga and is graduate of West Point.

Saratoga Mayor Yan Zhao, named Woman of the Year for state Senate District 15, has received many accolades. The most touching may be from daughter Angela Hong, who says, “My mom is truly a superwoman. She works a full-time job in the semiconductor industry, is a city mayor and is a wife and mother to three kids. She inspires me every day.”
