Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from May 20-25.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Liam Barrett, Mountain View baseball: Barrett, a senior, totaled two hits, three RBIs and threw a scoreless inning in relief as the Spartans won the Central Coast Section Division IV title over Homestead in a dominant 10-3 win. Mountain View will play Leroy Greene Academy from Sacramento at home in the first round of the CIF NorCal playoffs on Tuesday. 

Sean DeBoard, The King’s Academy baseball: DeBoard’s single brought home the go-ahead runs to lead the Knights to a 4-2 win against Leigh in the CCS Division II title game. 

A.J. Martinez, Granada baseball: The senior had the walk-off hit in Granada’s 1-0 win in 14 innings against De La Salle in the North Coast Section Division I finals. Granada broke De La Salle’s 33-game playoff winning streak in a game that stretched across two days.

Khaliq Muhammad, Pittsburg track and field: Muhammad took second in the boys pole vault at the CIF state championships with a mark of 16-4.

Vote now: Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week

Nico Rodriguez, Archbishop Mitty baseball: Rodriguez went 6 for 7 to go along two RBIs, four runs and a stolen base across two CCS playoff games. The senior helped Mitty win its second section title in three years in a 6-2 victory against St. Ignatius. 

Brandon Rush, Bishop O’Dowd track and field: Rush won the state title in the triple jump, posting a mark of 47-5. 

Ryan Schnell, Menlo baseball: The 5-foot-10 pitcher pitched a complete game, striking out four and allowing four hits in Menlo’s 3-1 win against Lincoln-San Jose in the CCS Division VI finals. The Knights received the No. 1 seed in the CIF NorCal Regionals and will play No. 8 Redding Christian at home on Tuesday.
