Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from May 20-25.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Alexis Bojorquez-Nava, Branham softball: Bojorquez-Nava was 2 for 2 and drove in a run in the Bruins 4-3 loss to Monterey in the Central Coast Section Division I semifinals. The senior was Branham’s team leader and best hitter all season, batting .424 while leading the team in RBIs (27).

Rae D’Amato, Aragon softball: The senior was 2 for 2 with two RBIs in Aragon’s 11-0 win over Christopher in the CCS Division IV championship game. The Dons won their second  in five years.

Alissa Jones, Berean Christian softball: The junior went 3 for 4 and brought home a run in the Eagles’ 10-9 victory against St. Bernard’s in the NCS Division V finals. Berean improved to 13-6. 

Hannah Rutherford, Mountain View: Rutherford took second place in the 400-meter race at the CIF state championships, finishing in 53.70.

Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week: Matthew Castillo, Prospect

Pinkie Schnayer, Campolindo track and field: Schnayer finished first at the CIF state championships in the shot put with a throw that went 47-3 ¾ . 

Lola Sierra, Capuchino softball: The junior struck out 10 and allowed three hits in the Mustangs’ 7-3 win over Milpitas in the CCS Division II title game. Capuchino will play No. 2 seed Cardinal Newman in the first round of the CIF NorCal Division III playoffs.

Lauren Tran, Amador Valley softball: Tran knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of a 3-2 win over College Park in the NCS Division I final. The Dons won their fifth section title on Saturday.
