San Jose: Police conducting training exercise at Oakridge Mall this morning

The San Jose Police Department is conducting a training exercise at Westfield Oakridge Mall in South San Jose today, June 8.

The training is slated to involve nearly 100 officers, according to Officer Tanya Hernandez. Shoppers will still be able to access the mall throughout the training, which began at 7 a.m. on Saturday and is slated to end in the early afternoon.

In December 2021, gunfire broke out at the mall, sending shoppers scrambling to safety on a busy evening just days before Christmas. Officers instructed shoppers and employees to shelter in place, then later escorted them out after the mall had been searched and declared safe.

Investigating officers determined that a shooting had taken place, as shell casings were found at the scene, but no shooter or victim was ever found.
