Lyric Theatre hosts 3rd annual San Jose Light Opera Festival

Lyric Theatre is hosting its third annual San Jose Light Opera Festival July 20-Aug. 4 at the Hammer Theatre Center in downtown San Jose. The festival features 12 performances of three shows over three weekends.

A fully staged production of the Broadway classic “Fiddler on the Roof” is set for Saturday, July 20, Sunday, July 21 and Saturday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m., and Friday, July 26, Saturday, July 27 and Thursday, Aug. 1 at 8 p.m.

Performances of “The Best of Cole Porter,” a choral concert with orchestra, are scheduled for Sunday, July 28, at 2 p.m. and Saturday, July 20, and Saturday, Aug. 3 at 8 p.m.

Movie chain shuts South Bay theaters as cinema firm’s fate turns murky

Lyric Theatre is presenting a semi-staged version of “The Red Mill,” Victor Herbert’s first successful Broadway musical, to mark the 100th anniversary of Herbert’s death. In this light-hearted 1906 operetta, two broke American vaudevillians wreak havoc at a Netherlands inn, interfering with two proposed marriages. Performance dates are Saturday, July 27, and Sunday, Aug. 4, at 2 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 2, at 8 p.m.

Festival passes are $60-$105 and single tickets are $20-$45 at https://www.lyrictheatre.org/festival2024.

ROSE GARDEN>>Playful People Productions is seeking teens and adults ages 12 and up for its fall production of “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.” Auditions will be held Aug. 12-13, and performances are Oct. 26-Nov. 4 at the Historic Hoover Theatre. No prior performing experience is necessary.

The coming-of-age musical, with book and lyrics by Tom MacRae and score by Dan Gillespie Sells, was inspired by the British television documentary “Jamie: Drag Queen at 16.”
