OAKLAND — A Bay Area man has been sentenced to 15 years in state prison to settle charges that he killed a man in 2021, court records show.
Jason Mattox, 23, was sentenced after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of Jon Martin Andre III, 18, of Oakland. Mattox was transferred to state prison in May and is currently incarcerated in Vacaville, records show.
Police identified Mattox as an Oakland resident but court papers say he is from San Francisco.

Andre was shot and killed at 12:05 p.m. Feb. 26, 2021, on the 3600 block of Green Acre Road in Oakland, police said at the time. Witnesses told police that the suspect was seen in the area asking for “Jon” and that after the shooting, the same man was seen “shedding clothing” and running away, according to court records.
Mattox was identified as a suspect and arrested within minutes of the shooting, and was in the same area when police took him into custody, according to court records. Police never disclosed the suspected motive.
In court papers arguing for Mattox to be released on bail, his lawyer called the shooting an “aberration” and said Mattox only had one shoplifting arrest on his record. Family members wrote support letters describing him as “kind, humble,” and eager to learn from his mistakes.
Mattox will get credit for the three years spent behind bars before the case was resolved. He was also ordered to pay $4,500 in victim restitution, court records show. The sentencing order also recommends he attend anger management classes while incarcerated.
