Oakland Ballers to provide fans with chance to play manager through new partnership

Between “MLB: The Show” and “Out of the Park Baseball,” fans of America’s pastime have several outlets that allow them to play the role of big-league manager or general manager. These simulations are, of course, virtual — outside the boundaries of reality. The Oakland Ballers, perpetually pushing the envelope since their inception, are giving their fans the shot to call the shots.

The B’s, in conjunction with the Pioneer Baseball League and KPIX, announced on Monday that they will be partnering with Fan Controlled Sports to produce a “first of its kind interactive experience” when the team takes on the Idaho Falls Chukars at Raimondi Park on Aug. 31, one that will give fans a voice in decisions typically reserved for managers and front office.

Beginning today, fans can download the Control app on iOS and Android and start voting on decisions leading up to the game, options that include jersey selection, the starting lineup and starting pitcher. On the day of the game, which falls on the team’s fan appreciation day, fans will have the opportunity to vote on some in-game decisions, such as pitch selection. Additionally, fans can win prizes for participating in predictive picks and polls.

“We set out to build a team that centers fans in every way – because we believe the real value of a sports team is its fanbase,” said Bryan Carmel, co-founder of the Oakland Ballers, in a statement. “We are excited to demonstrate this to Oakland by giving fans the opportunity to directly influence both fun and serious game-play decisions. We hope everyone enjoys our new jersey designs, unveiled today, and will join us at Raimondi Park on August 31 for a fan-controlled night of baseball!”

“The Ballers were a perfect choice when we were looking for a baseball team that understands the value of empowering and engaging with fans,” said Andy Dolich, COO of Fan Controlled Sports, in a statement. “We’re excited to be bringing the Fan Controlled Sports experience to the game of baseball and look forward to seeing Bay Area fans and beyond have fun and enjoy the game of baseball in a revolutionary way.”
