Wish You Were Here

JAPAN: San Jose residents Alison and Anita Phagan spent 18 days in Japan in late March and early April, Anita says, “chasing cherry blossoms in rainy weather. A highlight was visiting Asami Enemoto Kobayashi, (my) college friend from San Jose State University almost 20 years ago.”

In addition to sightseeing and catching up, they visited a couple of craft studios for some hands-on fun that included dying fabrics with indigo at the Wanariya studio in the Asakusa area of Tokyo. The group included, from left, Hisashi and Asami Kobayashi, daughter Miori, Alison and Anita Phagan. “The Kobayashi kids, Miori and younger brother Yuta, were proud of their creations and eager to take them home!”

TRAVEL TIPS: “We recommend cooking and art classes to really enjoy a trip to Japan. Many hands-on classes are offered in cities across Japan, including drilling bamboo light creations in Kyoto. There is a candy sculpting class at Asakusa Amezaiku Ameshin, not too far away (from Wanariya).”
