Federal and state rules
needed for e-bikes
Re: “Cities struggle to get a handle on e-bike safety” (Page A1, Aug. 19).
Thank you to Bay Area News Group for highlighting the recent increase in e-bike injuries being witnessed across America, which spurred several California towns to take action to promote rider safety.
AB 1778 to restrict Class 2 e-bike use to riders over age 16 by Assemblyman Damon Connolly has been sent to the governor’s desk, and will hopefully soon be signed into law to protect youth.
Perhaps Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg could also weigh in here to promote rider safety with federal action to regulate e-bike manufacture and use, and ensure speed limiters are not disabled.

Trump would take
what Biden has given
Re: “Harris economy would worsen inflation rate” (Page A6, Aug. 20).
Ed Kahl from Woodside is already crying wolf regarding inflation under a Harris presidency. He believes that Joe Biden’s administration is the reason for our inflation.
Ed apparently forgot about COVID and the global supply shortages that were caused by it. I never read that Ed complained about Donald Trump calling the pandemic a hoax and that it would “just go away,” but he’s now complaining about inflation that has been decreasing slowly but still decreasing.
Inflation in the United States is high, but it’s higher around the world in other democratic countries. The government gave millions of Americans a hand during the pandemic. That helped many Americans. The other hand (that of Trump) will take any money given to the middle class by the government and give it to his rich friends. The government gives with one hand and the other takes it away, right?

Harris passes tests for
presidential qualities
Policies aside, my voting decision starts with honor, character and integrity. If a candidate cannot clear that hurdle, that is an automatic disqualifier for me.
One candidate clearly has demonstrated who they are. Please join me in voting for Kamala Harris for president.

Halloween displays
are desensitizing us
Today, as I drove to the post office, I noted the beginnings of a Halloween display in a nearby front yard.

The homeowner has begun by installing a full-size bed with mattress and headboard. On the large, white headboard was a very realistic replica of blood splatter. I’m not sure where this display is going, but it cannot be good.
Has Halloween given us permission to publicly express a coarseness that never considers its deeper meaning? What do displays (butcher knives, severed heads, blood and gore) say about us? It is the adults — not the kids — who are putting up these displays for our children to absorb.
We need to give some thought to the desensitizing and demoralizing impact such displays have, not only on our children but on all of us.
