Veterans Day
Veterans Day may soon join the list of official town holidays, after an ordinance to do so was introduced at the Aug. 20 town council meeting.
The move came after the town worked with its bargaining units like the Police Officers Association to add Veterans Day as a holiday, and staff recommended that the holiday be added for the town as a whole. The reading of the ordinance was part of the consent calendar at last week’s council meeting. The council is set to vote on its adoption at its Sept. 3 meeting; the ordinance would go into effect 30 days after that date.

West Valley College is offering free classes for older adults through its new Senior Guided Pathways program.
Older adults can take credited and noncredited courses, with access to free transportation to the Saratoga campus and technical support provided by Successful Aging Solutions & Community Consulting.
“By breaking down barriers to access and providing comprehensive career support, Senior Guided Pathways is making it easier for local adults to access community programs, enabling them to secure better jobs and enhance their quality of life,” Tylor Taylor, the consulting firm’s CEO, said in a release.

Closer to free tuition
Legislation that would allow students who live in West Valley College’s service area to receive an automatic tuition waiver was recently approved by the state legislature.
The bill, introduced by state Assemblymember Marc Berman, helps to streamline the West Valley-Mission Community College District’s existing tuition waiver. The bill now needs Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature.
“Today’s bipartisan vote for AB 3158 is a huge win for all students of the West Valley-Mission Community College District, bringing us just one step away from free tuition for all,” Berman said in a release.
