LAFAYETTE – Just over a day after the Davis wildfire in Nevada canceled Acalanes scheduled home game against Reno’s Galena High, the Lafayette school has found a new opponent to play on Friday night.
Acalanes (2-0) will be making the nearly 100-mile trek to Loomis where they will play Del Oro (0-2) in a 7 p.m. game.
The Reno Gazette Journal reports that the Davis Fire – which has burned for six days as of Thursday – has consumed an estimated 5,824 acres and was at 37% containment.
Galena High had not practiced all week and notified Acalanes on Wednesday that it wouldn’t be making the trip down to Lafaeytte. Members of the Acalanes program sent their sympathies to Galena and the Nevada community.
“We’re hoping that they’re safe right now,” Acalanes team captain Drew McKenzie told the Bay Area News Group on Wednesday.

Acalanes coach Floyd Burnsed added, “There’s a lot of things that are more important than high school football, and this is one of them.”
The Dons have started the season with wins over Lowell-San Francisco and Mt. Diablo. They averaged 48.5 points in the two victories.
Del Oro was competitive in its two games against Reed and Placer, but were unable to sniff victories. The Acalanes’ defense will have to account for wide receiver Jackson Malbrough, who averaged 97 yards receiving through Del Oro’s first two games.
