Kate Middleton’s new eternity band sparks speculation

Princess of Wales Kate Middleton was sporting a new eternity band in her latest video announcing the end of her cancer treatment.

The band has apparently replaced Princess Diana’s 18-carat sapphire engagement ring, which used to grace Kate’s royal finger.

The new bling is laden with alternating dark gems and diamonds. According to People magazine, it was first spotted on her finger in August when she and husband Prince William shared a video message congratulating the U.K.’s Olympic athletes for their success at the Paris Games.

“The ring that Kate wore is definitely a newer addition to her jewelry box,” Lauren Kiehna, founder of The Court Jeweller blog, told People. “It’s a slim, sparkling eternity-style band with alternating light and dark gemstones.”

Amid speculation the band was the same promise ring William gave Middleton when they were dating in college, Kiehna wrote in a blog post examining the issue that she’s sure the band is new.

The pearl-and-garnet rose gold promise ring represents their birthstones — garnet for Kate’s January birthday, and a pearl symbolizing William’s, which falls in June, according to People. The new ring meanwhile consists of a bigger band and more embedded stones than the promise ring.

The famous sapphire-and-diamond engagement ring from Princess Diana came much later, when William proposed in 2010.

Kate wore the apparently new band stacked alongside her Welsh gold wedding band and the white gold-and-diamond Annoushka ring that she began wearing after welcoming their first child, Prince George, in 2013.
