Officers found the man unconscious around 3:25 p.m. next to the railroad tracks near Foothill Expressway and Interstate 280, the Los Altos Police Department said in a news release.

The man – identified as a resident of Los Altos – was taken to a trauma center with life-threatening head injuries, police said. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday.

“Preliminary findings suggest the injuries were due to a blow to the head,” police said.

A person of interest was detained and questioned, police said, adding that the man and the person of interest were acquainted.

The attack happened sometime in the late morning or early afternoon, according to police, who asked area residents to view their security camera footage for anything out of the ordinary.
