SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Cedric Teuchert had a goal and Marcel Hartel scored on a penalty kick in the first 13 minutes and St. Louis City held on for a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night.
Teuchert staked St. Louis City (6-11-13, 31 points) to the lead in the 4th minute, using assists from defender Jannes Horn — the first of his career — and Hartel to score his fourth goal in his sixth appearance, all starts.
Horn sent a low cross from the left sideline to the goal mouth and Rasmus Alm let it run by him, taking two Quakes defenders with him and leaving Teuchert all alone to score.
Hartel’s PK goal came after he drew a foul on San Jose’s Rodrigues right at the edge of the box on a bouncing ball. Rodrigues’ cleat slightly clipped Hartel as he pulled his foot back during a slide, and it was upheld after video review. It was Hartel’s second goal in his fifth career appearance, all starts.
Jeremy Ebobisse pulled San Jose (5-22-3, 18 points) within a goal in the 40th minute with his fifth netter of the season. Defender Carlos Akapo earned his first assist this season and the fifth of his career as he and Ebobisse exchanged passes ahead of the goal.

“The first 10 minutes the game, we were just poor, didn’t start well, but came into the game, had some big chances,” Quakes interim head coach Ian Russell said in the postgame press conference. “The guys showed they haven’t given up. I know that we can’t make the playoffs, but they’ve shown a lot of fighting.”
Roman Bürki totaled four saves in goal for St. Louis City, which notched its first road win of the season albeit against the league’s worst team.
William Yarbrough did not have a save for the Earthquakes, who have four points from five games since the Leagues Cup ended.
St. Louis City returns home to host Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. The Earthquakes travel to play Montreal CF on Saturday.
