San Jose Sharks assign top goalie prospect to AHL

SAN JOSE — The San Jose Sharks assigned goalie Yaroslav Askarov, who is now healthy, to the Barracuda of the AHL on Friday.

Askarov missed all of Sharks’ training camp due to a lower-body injury he incurred in early September. Askarov is expected to practice with the Barracuda later Friday morning, although he is not expected to play Friday night when the Barracuda play a preseason game in Bakersfield.

Askarov got back on the ice earlier this week. He and a group of injured Sharks players — including defensemen Marc-Edouard Vlasic (upper body) and Shakir Mukhamadullin (lower body) — began skating away from the training camp group on Monday. Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky told reporters on Thursday that Mukhamadullin is believed to be closer to a return than Vlasic.

Faithful to the Bay? Sharks center, Boston native told upset friends he was ‘forced’ to wear 49ers jersey

The Sharks are now down to the two goalies they’ll likely start the season with — Vitek Vanecek and Mackenzie Blackwood. It was not immediately clear who would tart Friday’s game against the Anaheim Ducks at SAP Center.

Had Askarov been healthy from the start of camp and could show that he was ready for the NHL, the Sharks would have potentially been open to keeping three goalies for the start of the season — or at least general manager Mike Grier didn’t rule out after he acquired Askarov.

Askarov, minor league forward Nolan Burke, and a 2025 third-round pick were acquired by the Sharks from the Nashville Predators in August for a 2025 first-round pick and forward David Edstrom — both previously acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in the Tomas Hertl trade in March.
