Dublin appoints new police chief

DUBLIN – Dublin appointed Victor Fox, an Alameda County Sheriff’s Office commander, to replace former Chief Nate Schmidt. Fox will take over as chief of Dublin Police Services on Oct. 30.

He has 22 years of experience with the sheriff’s office, with experience at the Eden Township Substation, Santa Rita Jail and Glenn E. Dyer Jail. He graduated from UCLA and the FBI National Academy, and is currently pursuing a masters degree in public safety from the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Virginia.

He also teaches at Chabot College and sits on the college’s Administration of Justice Advisory Board.

“I am pleased that Commander Fox will take the reins,” Colleen Tribby said in a statement. “His previous experience working at Dublin Police Services will enable him to step in and hit the ground running in order to lead the department and serve the people of Dublin.”

Fox previously worked on surveillance projects such as the automated license plate readers and “situational awareness cameras” throughout Dublin. He was promoted to captain in 2019, worked briefly as a watch commander and also served as a training manager and police academy director, overseeing the graduation of 1,000 officers.

He was in charge of the Sheriff’s Honor Guard, a group of sheriff’s deputies which shows up to funerals of fallen officers, retirements and other community events. At Chabot College, he taught about “less lethal munitions,” emergency vehicle operations, firearms, ethics and more.

“I am proud to have served the citizens of Alameda County and I am honored to once again serve the residents of the city of Dublin as your new Chief of Police,” Fox said in a press release.

Fox replaces Schmidt, who announced his retirement on Tuesday. Schmidt left the post after a year and a half as chief and 25 years in law enforcement.

It is unclear what Fox’s salary will be once he begins his new position at the end of the month.

In 2022, Fox was paid $335,889 in total compensation, including $87,892 in benefits. His salary was $211,587.
