17 California middle school students checked for possible overdoses

Seventeen students from Walter Reed Middle School in the Studio City/North Hollywood area were monitored Thursday morning, Oct. 17 for possible overdose symptoms, the Los Angeles City Fire Department said.

Around 10:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a reported overdose at 4525 Irvine Ave. Two students were transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries and the rest were expected to be released back to the school, officials said.

Details on what the students may have overdosed on were not provided.

The Los Angeles Unified School District released a statement saying “a group of students may have consumed a banned substance.”

Emergency personnel were contacted, the students received medical attention, and their parents were notified.

“The Los Angeles School Police Department is currently investigating this incident, and we are actively working with our local health partners,” the statement said. “We ask that you talk to your children about substance abuse and the harmful side effects of controlled substances. We need your help to educate our students about the harms that drugs can cause.”

Last week, five girls from Nobel Charter Middle School in Northridge began feeling sick after possibly ingesting cannabis-laced edibles, authorities said.

Three of them were taken to a hospital in fair condition, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Two were released to their parents or guardians after being evaluated at the scene.
