Shortly before 8:30, emergency responders were called for a reported sighting of a man in street clothes in the water at the Highway 1 beach. Within half an hour, the person was pulled from the water and pronounced dead.

It was not immediately clear if Monday’s incident was related to an unsuccessful ocean rescue call reported shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday near Greyhound Rock, 3 miles to the north.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner’s Office is withholding the identity of the deceased person until next of kin can be notified, agency spokesperson Ashley Keehn said.
