San Jose to host United States women’s national team for Olympic gold-medal rematch in April 2025

The United States women’s national soccer team is coming to the Bay Area in 2025.

The U.S. women will take on Brazil in two April friendly matches, the second of which will be held at PayPal Park in San Jose at 7:30 p.m. on April 8. SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles will also host a friendly match between the two national teams on April 5.

The pair of matches will be the first meetings between the United States and Brazil since their matchup in the 2024 Olympic gold medal game in Paris. The Americans won that match 1-0 thanks to a 57th-minute goal from Mallory Swanson.

Brazil is currently ranked eighth in the world, while the United States sits in the top spot in the worldwide rankings.

The USA’s trip to PayPal Park, home to Bay FC of the NWSL and the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS, marks a return to the Bay Area, where the USWNT has a long and rich history. Many current and former players have Bay Area ties, and the USWNT played its first-ever match in California in San Jose at Spartan Stadium in 1997.

“These are matches against a top team in fantastic stadiums that will be as fun for the players as they are for the fans,” said U.S. head coach Emma Hayes in a release. “To play the first ever women’s professional match at Sofi Stadium is a great honor and one worthy of this team. We’re very much looking forward to spending this trip in California which has produced so many players for the U.S. Women’s National Team and so many great moments in our history.”

Notable U.S. players with local connections likely to participate in the game include center back Naomi Girma, a native of San Jose who played at Stanford, as well as fellow Stanford alumnae like Sophia Smith and Tierna Davidson, both of whom made the U.S. Olympic roster in 2024.

Brazil and the United States have previously faced off twice in the Bay Area. They contested a World Cup semifinal at Stanford Stadium in 1999 and matched up in a pre-Olympic friendly at Spartan Stadium in 2000.

PayPal Park most recently hosted a USWNT friendly against Wales on July 9, 2023. The United States won that match 2-0, with Trinity Rodman scoring both goals.

Ticket presales for the match will begin on Dec. 9 and conclude on Dec. 13 at 8 a.m. local venue time.

The San Jose match will be televised on TBS, Max, Universo and Peacock. The match in Los Angeles can be seen on TNT, truTv, Max, Universo and Peacock.
