For decades, Daniel Aristimuno, an entrepreneurial San Ramon resident and Argentinian expat, dreamed about opening his own cafe.
The dream took a back burner while he started a company in the healthcare space. But 23 years after immigrating to the U.S. from Argentina, he’s finally created a little slice of his home country in Redwood City.
The cafe space was love at first sight, he says, with its large windows and natural lighting. Since Baires Bakery & Cafe opened Oct. 7 on Broadway in Redwood City, fellow Argentinians and locals alike are finding lots to love about the minimalist space, which offers a self-serve pastry case full of fresh-baked goods, including empanadas, medialunas, alfajores and quince tarts.
His favorite? Medialunas with dulce de leche, he says.
The cafe also serves two types of sandwich, a Milanesa and a Choripán, filled with schnitzel and chorizo, respectively, plus soups, salads and coffee, which can be served alongside a shot of orange juice as a palate-cleansing vitamin C boost.
More and more people are continuing to find the cafe, including a friendly — and grateful — Argentinian expat community he didn’t even know was here, Aristimuno says. He recently had Argentinian visitors trek out for a visit from New York and near Sonoma to try the cafe.

Now, the cafe is in the process of securing permits to offer happy hour and live music, with plans to add outdoor seating and offer coffee tastings in the months to come.
It has been a lot of work, but Aristimuno is happy with the outcome: “It’s my baby. I’m looking at the baby start to walk.”
Details: Open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. daily at 2400 Broadway, Redwood City; bairesbakery.com/home.
