The fire damaged laundry operations and medical areas at the shelter, located at 901 Ames Ave., HSSV said in a statement. No employees, volunteers or animals were injured.
Animals are being cared for in temporary accommodations while the shelter is shuttered.
“We are incredibly grateful for the quick response from the Milpitas Fire Department Station 4 and the dedication of our staff and volunteers who ensured the safety of all animals and people on-site,” HSSV President Kurt Krukenberg said.
Krukenberg said the organization is “assessing the extent of the damage and working diligently to resume operations as quickly as possible.” Updates will be provided via the organization’s website – www.hssv.org – and social media channels.
