Winter is here which means rain, mud and chilly temperatures — not a great recipe for outdoor fun with our dogs. And a dog that doesn’t get to exercise their brain and body is bound to get into mischief. But just because you’re indoors doesn’t mean your dog can’t have a blast. Here are some fun ways to keep your furry friend entertained and happy during those chilly days.
• DIY obstacle course. Turn your living room into an agility course. Use household items like cushions, chairs and blankets to create tunnels and weaving paths. Encourage your dog to go through the course using their favorite toy or treat as a lure. It’s a fantastic way to engage them physically and mentally. Make it a family activity by letting everyone take turns designing the course.
• Interactive toys. Invest in puzzle toys or treat-dispensing gadgets to stimulate your dog’s brain. Toys like Kongs filled with peanut butter — make sure it’s xylitol-free — or interactive games where they have to find hidden treats are perfect for indoor entertainment. These activities keep them busy while sharpening their problem-solving skills. They also help reduce boredom and prevent destructive behaviors.
• Tug-of-war. This is my personal favorite and all you need for this classic game is a sturdy tug toy and some enthusiasm. Tug-of-war is not only a great workout but also a bonding experience for you and your pup. Just be mindful of your dog’s size and strength to keep the game safe. Always let them “win” a few rounds to keep them engaged and confident.
• Training time. Use the winter months to teach your dog new tricks or reinforce old ones. From “spin” and “shake” to more advanced commands like “clean up,” where they pick up toys, training sessions are a productive way to spend time together. Dogs love the mental stimulation and the treats that come with success. Plus, learning new tricks is a confidence booster for them.
• Scent games. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, so why not play scent-based games? Hide treats around the house and encourage them to “find it.” Start with easy hiding spots and increase the difficulty as they get better. It’s like a treasure hunt for your pup and a great way to engage their natural instincts. By the way, if your dog loves it, Marin Humane offers scenting classes.
• Cuddle and movie time. Sometimes, the best activity is simply relaxing. Snuggle up with your dog under a cozy blanket and watch your favorite wintertime movie or binge-watch the latest Netflix series. (Personally, I love the Nordic noir genre, though I’m not sure my dog does.) They’ll love the extra attention, and you’ll get some much-needed downtime. Add a warm beverage and some dog-friendly snacks for the ultimate cozy day.
Being indoors doesn’t have to be boring for you or your dog. With a little creativity, you can keep your four-legged friend happy, healthy and entertained all winter long.
