Russian concert pianist Alexander Malofeev is set to perform for Steinway Society-The Bay Area on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2:30 p.m. at the Montgomery Theater in downtown San Jose. The program features works by Schubert, Kabalevsky, Janáček, Liszt and Scriabin.
Malofeev studied at the Gnessin Moscow Special School of Music and made his breakthrough at age 13, winning first prize at the 2014 International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians. He went on to win the grand prize at the 2016 Grand Piano Competition and the 2017 Premio Giovane Talento Musicale dell’anno. In 2017, he became the first Yamaha Young Artist.
Tickets to his San Jose concert are $53-$78 at https://steinwaysociety.com or 408-300-5635. Student tickets at the door are $20. Steinway Society also offers a recorded version to view the concert on demand for 48 hours after its release. Tickets are $26.75 per household.

WILLOW GLEN>>Pusaka Sunda is set to perform a free Javanese gamelan concert on Jan. 19 at the First Congregational Church of San Jose as part of Concerts on the Corner. The 12-member gamelan degung ensemble features Burhan Sukarma on suling bamboo flute, traditional dancer Cia Garcia and Rina Oesman, guest vocalist from Indonesia.
The concert, part of First Congregational Church’s community concert series, starts at 3 p.m. at the church, located at 1980 Hamilton Ave. A free will offering will be taken to support the Concerts on the Corner program.
