The Sunnyvale City Council on Jan. 7 selected Councilmember Linda Sell to serve as vice mayor. The vice mayor serves a one-year term and is selected by the city council each January. Sell replaces District 3 Councilmember Murali Srinivasan as vice mayor.

Mayor Larry Klein and three councilmembers took ceremonial oaths of office at the Jan. 7 meeting. Klein was re-elected as mayor in November, and Alysa Cisneros was re-elected to the District 2 seat. Charlsie Chang was elected to the District 4 seat vacated by Russ Melton, and Eileen Le was elected to the District 6 seat vacated by Omar Din.

New finance director

Matthew Paulin has been named Sunnyvale’s new finance department director, effective Jan. 27. His starting salary will be $330,000.

As head of the finance department, Paulin will oversee all financial operations and ensure regulatory compliance for the city. He will also provide guidance on critical projects such as the Sunnyvale Cleanwater Program and the Civic Center Modernization project.

Paulin has been director of finance for the city of Elk Grove since 2021. Prior to that, he was an assistant county administrator with the County of San Joaquin and the chief financial officer for the City of Stockton. In the latter role, Paulin helped Stockton emerge from bankruptcy and be ranked as one of the most fiscally healthy large cities in the United States.

Assistant Finance Director Dennis Jaw has been serving as interim director since September 2024, when Tim Kirby stepped down as head of the finance department to become Sunnyvale’s city manager.
