OAKLAND — A man was fatally shot at an East Oakland homeless camp Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 8:55 a.m. at a homeless camp in the 2200 block of East 12th Street.
Officers responding to a gunfire detection system alert found the man on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers provided emergency medical measures at the scene before the man was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Police have not yet said if the man lived at the camp or was visiting someone there.
A motive for the killing has not been determined. No arrests were announced and no suspect information was released.

The killing is the sixth homicide investigated by Oakland police this year, the same number as this time last year.
It is not the first time there has been deadly violence at the camp.
Last October, a man living there was killed when, while standing outside the camp, he was hit by an out-of-control car and knocked through a portion of the wrought-iron fence that surrounds the camp. And in September 2023, a 32-year-old man who lived at the camp was fatally shot there.
On the same block earlier this month, a woman was fatally shot at a gas station.
