The man, whose name has not been released, was driven by a friend to the hospital at about 8:11 p.m. Friday. He died a short time later.
The friend, a 31-year-old man, only told police he had picked up the victim in the 900 block of 7th Street in West Oakland. Police went to the area but could find no evidence that a shooting happened there, including witnesses, video surveillance, shell casings or blood.
Authorities were still trying to find a crime scene on Saturday. Police ended up arresting the friend for firearms offenses after they found two handguns inside the vehicle he was driving.
A motive for the killing has not been determined. The death is the eighth homicide investigated by city police this year. Last year at this time, Oakland police had investigated six homicides.
Anyone with information about the homicide can contact Oakland police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950.
