A new eatery specializing in grilled and deep-fried seafood has opened in the Public Market in Emeryville.
Le Marine Fish & Grill debuted in early February in the spot formerly occupied by the short-lived La Vida Fish & Chips. However, fish and chips are still on the menu, as are other dishes including crab burgers on brioche, grilled salmon and a range of “magnolias” — Turkish puddings or trifles that incorporate fresh fruit.
A meal at Le Marine might start with a bowl of New England clam chowder ($10.95) with sourdough or perhaps fried calamari ($13.95) served with house tartar. Children can dig into the tomato soup with melted mozzarella, a grilled cheese sando or chicken tendies ($11.95).
The fish and chips ($18.95 for three pieces) feature cod, as they should, and come with coleslaw and malt vinegar. That crab-brioche burger ($17.95) is loaded with arugula and tartar sauce, and other sandwiches, which come with fries, include grilled branzino and a classic tuna melt ($15.95).
The health-conscious can select rice bowls ($16.95-$18.95) with accompaniments like prawns and zucchini fritters, grilled salmon or lentil balls. Salads veer traditional, think Romaine Caesar and a goat cheese salad with beets, though in this case the cheese is fried.
And then there are the magnolias, arriving in flavors like Oreo, strawberry, banana and kataifi — sweet, shredded phyllo. Layered in glass jars with custard and slices of fresh berries, these desserts should have kids and kid-minded adults happily scooping them up.
Le Marine is the latest tenant to fill a vacant spot at the Public Market. Ramen Hiroshi also set up shop recently. On the departing list: Caribbean eatery Calypso Rose, the taqueria C Casa and Indonesian bakery Nusa, though that one’s looking for a new home.
Details: Open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday at 5959 Shellmound St., Emeryville; instagram.com/lemarinefishgrill.
