Man sets himself on fire outside San Mateo County Hall of Justice

REDWOOD CITY — A man suffered “significant burns” Thursday afternoon when he set himself on fire outside the San Mateo County Hall of Justice, according to authorities.

The incident happened around 1 p.m., the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Deputies rushed to the man and quickly extinguished the flames.

The man was taken to an area hospital. A deputy was also treated for minor injuries to his hand.

The sheriff’s office said the man is believed to have been suffering a mental health crisis.
