While Blake Lively is going through a bit of a rough patch with her film career, she could perhaps pick up some work as a designer for kids’ birthday cakes.
But parents hiring Lively for her bespoke designs would need share her self-described “sense of humor.” The embattled “It Ends With Us” star recently revealed that she celebrated her son’s first birthday with a cake modeled on her breasts.
“My birthday cakes always have a little bit of a sense of humor, for my baby I just did a giant set of (breasts),” said Lively, who also is known as an avid baker. She was opening up about the cake during an Aug. 16. interview with BBC Radio 2 host Zoe Ball.
In an interview clip, posted on Instagram, Lively gestured toward her chest as she spoke. She called the cake “amazing” but joked that her son, Olin, might be embarrassed by photos of him with the cake when he gets older.
“Which I feel like will haunt him for life,” Lively laughingly acknowledged. But she insisted, “But, what do they want at 1? He can’t declare what he wants. So, boobs!”
The “Gossip Girl” star told Ball, “I’ll show you a picture after, they’re pretty amazing,” before clarifying, “Of the cake, not of mine. … Also amazing though.”
As Lively got up to leave the interview, she told the crew, “The cake is amazing, you do need to see that cake! You all need to see the cake.”
Lively is the mother of four children with her husband, “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds. Their son Olin, was born in February 2023, and they have three older daughters, 9, 7 and 4.
Lively sat down with BBC 2 to promote her new film, “It Ends With Us,” but her talk about her son’s “boob” cake stoked some ire on Instagram, for some of the same reasons that she has been embroiled in backlash over her star persona and her actions related to the production and promotion of “It Ends With Us.”
Since the film’s Aug. 6 premiere, her marketing efforts on behalf of the movie have resulted in a cascade of online gossip and reports about her being annoying, rude, insensitive or imperious over the course of her career. Much of the criticism stems from her “tone deaf” choice to publicly downplay the film’s serious narrative about her character, Lily Bloom, being abused by her husband. The film is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s best-selling dark romance about domestic violence.
Lively has been ripped on social media for doing interviews and social media posts that promote the film as if it’s a rom-com about a beautiful florist shop owner having to choose between two hot guys, or as if it’s a bubbly, “Barbie”-style story about fashion and a woman’s journey of self-discovery. In one of the most objectionable promotional pieces for the film, Lively is seen in a TikTok video, encouraging female fans to turn an outing to the movie as a fun, female-bonding activity. She declares, “Grab your friends, wear your florals and head out to see it.”
The BBC 2 clip of Lively’s birthday-cake talk incited some more criticism about her giving another jokey interview, even as she’s promoting a film about domestic violence. Some people, responding to the BBC post, also mentioned her growing “mean girl” reputation.
“She’s insufferable,” one person said. Another said, “She tends to put others on edge. She seems to lack social skills.”
But not everyone thought Lively was being obnoxious. In fact, a few were charmed, with one person saying she was “hilarious,” and another saying they loved her “banter,” saying it was similar to her husband’s.
A bit more seriously, one person pointed out that Lively probably breast-fed her son, so it makes sense that he might be a bit fixated on her chest. “If it’s just family, I don’t understand why people are being so mean towards her,” the person said.
Another woman complimented Lively on the idea of a breast-shaped birthday cake for a 1-year-old. The woman’s praise suggested that Lively could start a trend among parents looking for an irreverent way to celebrate this milestone birthday.
“Hey that’s all my son wanted at one!!” the woman said. “Great idea. I love her so much.”
