Protesters block I-880 in Oakland, forcing closure of all lanes

OAKLAND — Protesters blocked an East Bay freeway early Monday, shutting it down and affecting the morning commute, the California Highway Patrol said.

Once Highway 1 stabilized at Rocky Creek, traffic can return to Big Sur

According to the CHP, all lanes were blocked on northbound Interstate 880 south of 5th Street and Embarcadero were blocked. The CHP had officers at the scene.

It was not known immediately why the protesters were there. The CHP issued a Sig Alert for severe traffic at 6:50 a.m.

Big rigs were being allowed on westbound I-580 while I-880 was blocked.

No other information was available right away.
