OAKLAND — A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 11 years in state prison for killing a 62-year-old man in West Oakland, court records show.
Deshaughn Johnson pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in the January 2023 death of 62-year-old Anthony Bradley. On Aug. 26, Johnson was formally sentenced to 11 years with credit for the nearly two years he spent behind bars while the case was pending, records show.
Bradley was beaten to death at 21st and Adeline streets, near where he lived. Police said at the time that Johnson claimed Bradley had attempted to rob him, but they found no evidence to support this.
Video of the attack shows an apparently defenseless Bradley lying on the pavement with Johnson punching and kicking him, according to court records. He later told police that he “blacked out” and didn’t remember the attack.
Police say they were unable to establish any connection between the two men and it appears they didn’t know one another.
