FREMONT — A driver has been charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and other charges in an October 2023 alcohol-related wrong-way crash on Interstate 680 that left a 23-year-old woman dead and the suspect and the other driver injured, according to authorities and court documents.
The suspect, Jesus Cancino Garcia, 25, of Fremont, has also been charged with felony driving the wrong way on a divided highway and an infraction of being an unlicensed driver.
The charges were filed Oct. 4. Cancino Garcia has been out of custody and prosecutors have notified him that charges have been filed and that he is to report to court Friday.
He is charged in a fatal head-on collision that happened about 1:15 a.m. Oct. 14, 2023 on I-680 near the Auto Mall Parkway.

According to authorities, Cancino Garcia was driving a gray Dodge Ram pickup truck northbound in a southbound lane when it collided head-on with a BMW330i.
Anjali Nand, 23, of Santa Rosa, who was a passenger in the BMW, was killed. The BMW driver was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
According to media accounts at the time, Cancino Garcia suffered major burns and other injuries when his truck overturned and caught fire. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
His blood-alcohol level at the time of the collision has not been released, but authorities said in court records that it was above the legal limit of .08.
