Consumer tip: Finding a contractor in California

Do you need to hire a contractor for your home improvement project or emergency home repair? In California, all home improvement projects over $500 require a contractor licensed by the Contractors State License Board (CSLB).

How can buyers buy an old home with electrical, insurance woes?

Looking up contractors in your area and whether any contractor under consideration is licensed is as easy as going to the Contractors State License Board’s website, cslb.ca.gov, and using their convenient search tools. You will also be able to determine on the website whether the contractor has workers’ compensation insurance for any employees they may have working at your home.

It’s a good rule of thumb to get at least three bids for your project. The lowest bid is not always going to be the best choice especially if it is far below the other two bids. When choosing between bids, compare line by line the scope of work each contractor is saying they will perform for the estimated price. Lastly, ask lots of question and check references, if available.
