Opinion: Outgoing Saratoga mayor reflects on commitment to community

As I reflect on the past year, I am deeply grateful for the privilege of serving Saratoga—a strong, vibrant and caring community. Every day, I am inspired by the residents, businesses and organizations that make Saratoga a place we are all proud to call home.

Throughout the year, I have had the pleasure of recognizing and collaborating with local and regional organizations that uplift and support our community. These include Asian Americans for Better Community, League of Women Voters, Montalvo Arts Center, Silicon Valley YMCA, Saratoga Historical Foundation, Saratoga Rotary and Special Olympics of Northern California. These groups, along with many others, enrich the fabric of our city and embody the spirit of service that defines Saratoga.

Our community’s strength lies in its people. This year, I was honored to celebrate individuals and groups who exemplify this spirit including Citizen of the Year Ray Froess; Businessperson of the Year Marilyn Marchetti; Firefighter of the Year Captain Tiffany Woods of the Santa Clara County Fire Department; Officer of the Year Deputy Chris Valesco of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office; and the Saratoga Village Gardeners as Organization of the Year. Their contributions remind us why Saratoga remains so special. Events such as the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony and our unique Interfaith Thanksgiving Service continue to unite us, celebrate diversity and foster a profound sense of togetherness.

This year, I had the privilege of representing Saratoga on several local and regional boards and serving as a liaison to the city council. These roles allowed me to collaborate with neighboring cities, Santa Clara County and various organizations to champion initiatives that benefit our community. A highlight was serving on the executive board of the Hakone Foundation, advocating for Hakone Estate and Gardens as a premier cultural and artistic venue.

As a member of the finance advisory committee, I had the rewarding task of working with my colleagues to review city budgets, financial policies and reports, ensuring transparency and sound planning for Saratoga’s future.

I also represented Saratoga on committees such as the Santa Clara County Housing and Community Development Advisory Committee, Library District Board of Directors, West Valley Sanitation District and League of California Cities Revenue and Taxation Policy Committee.

The taxation policy committee addresses crucial issues like finance administration, taxation reform and revenue needs. Through partnerships with elected officials and administrators across California, we advocate for policies that benefit residents and businesses throughout the state.

These roles have allowed me to address key issues affecting Saratoga, including public safety, infrastructure, housing and economic resilience.

A personal highlight this year has been hosting “Office Hours with the Mayor” at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. These conversations with residents have provided invaluable insights into the needs and aspirations of our community, reinforcing my commitment to serve.
As my term as mayor concludes, my dedication to Saratoga remains steadfast. I look forward to continuing to serve as a Saratoga City Councilmember, championing initiatives that uphold our city’s high standards for safety, preserve its natural beauty and enhance its reputation as an exceptional place to live, work and raise a family.

Thank you for your trust and support as we move forward together.

Yan Zhao is the mayor of Saratoga.
