A new Louisiana barbecue restaurant opened in Walnut Creek on Sunday.
Dad’s BBQ Next Generation began serving ribs, tri-tips, links, rib tips and chicken on Tice Valley Boulevard.
“It’s soul food,” said owner Delitha Henson. “Our flavors are more of a down-south, Louisiana flavor, because that’s where my grandparents are from: Louisiana and Mississippi.”
Henson is the granddaughter of Dennis Ray Hicks Sr. and Etta Delitha Hicks, who opened the original Dad’s BBQ in Oakland in 1999. Dad’s BBQ moved to Pittsburgh in 2006 and eventually to Antioch in 2020.
Dennis Hicks became the face of the franchise but it was Delitha Hicks’ recipes and cooking that made it such a popular spot, Delitha Henson said.

Combo plates including a drink, two sides and two, three and four meats, respectively, start at $33 and go to $43. Sides include mac and cheese, potato salad, collard greens, green beans, baked beans and, of course, cornbread.
There’s also “Mom’s Gumbo” ($24), which features shrimp, spicy sausage and tender okra simmered and poured over rice.
While the restaurant had a soft opening Sunday, it will have its official ribbon cutting on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
“It’s the beginning of a new generation,” said Henson, who once worked at the original Dad’s alongside most of her family members. “My grandparents are still involved and helping out. They bring that family-oriented, soul food vibe, making you feel right at home.”
