Prep roundup: Valley Christian snaps long skid against Mitty; Riordan, Ygnacio Valley roll

For the first time since 2006, Valley Christian won a boys basketball game against Archbishop Mitty.

Senior guard Brayden Harris scored eight of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter on Thursday night to lead the host Warriors — ranked 14th by the Bay Area News Group — to a 49-39 victory on their home court in West Catholic Athletic League play.

Mitty had won the previous 45 games between the teams, including a 56-54 triumph at home on Jan. 7 on a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The game on Thursday was deadlocked 30-30 going into the final eight minutes. Harris scored his first 11 points on a trio of 3-point buckets and a pair of free throws. Thirteen of his 19 points came in the second half. Justin Hampton had 11 points for Valley Christian (14-4, 5-3 WCAL).

The win was the fifth in the last six games for the Warriors.

No. 15 Mitty (12-7, 4-4) got eight points apiece from Grayson Jalal, Daniel Ryan and Caeden Hutcherson. 

No. 1 Archbishop Riordan 91, Sacred Heart Cathedral 33

The Crusaders improved to 8-0 in the WCAL and 17-1 overall, racing past another outmanned opponent. They led 51-12 at the half, and tied their season-high in points, accomplished on Dec. 26 against O’Dea-Seattle. Riordan has won its eight WCAL games by an average of 38.5 points. Twelve Crusaders scored, with four reaching double figures. They were Jasir Rencher, Cole White, Andrew Hilman and JP Pihtovs. Sacred Heart Cathedral is 9-9 overall and 2-6 in the WCAL.

No. 2 Salesian 61, St. Mary’s-Berkeley 50

The Pride erupted for 22 points in the third quarter, breaking open a 28-27 nail-biter at halftime. Salesian improved to 10-0 in the TCAL Rock and 21-2 overall. St. Mary’s is 17-7 and 6-5. Carlton Perrilliat Jr. led the Pride with 19 points and Elijah Stanley chipped in 10. Donovan Mikel scored 18 points for St. Mary’s and Jonathan Fernandez added 13. 

No. 5 De La Salle 66, Livermore 47

The Spartans (21-3, 6-1 EBAL) trailed 31-27 at the half, but a 14-0 run by the home team to start the third quarter took care of that. DLS outscored the visitors 25-7 in the period and 39-16 after intermission. Alec Blair and David Balogun each had 20 points to lead the Spartans. Blair scored 14 points in the third quarter. Balogun had 12 points in the first half. Livermore, which fell to 0-7 in league matchups, was led in scoring by Amari Chandler with 12 points. CT Harper and Dylan Wherry had 11 apiece for the Cowboys, who are 14-10 overall.

No. 16 Ygnacio Valley 62, Northgate 41

The Wolves outscored the home team in every quarter. It was close for a half, with Ygnacio Valley leading 26-19 at intermission. The second half was all Ygnacio. The Wolves improved to 15-8 and 4-3 in the Diablo Athletic League. Preston Oliver led the way with 22 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Antonio Kellogg Jr. dropped in 14 points, pulled down five rebounds, dished off four assists, added four steals and had two blocked shots. Northgate (16-7, 6-3) got 14 points and eight rebounds from David Harris. Deangelo Smith contributed 10 points and seven boards.

Acalanes 40, Clayton Valley 35

Trailing 35-33 with three minutes left to play, Acalanes went on a 7-0 run to win the game and join Las Lomas atop the DAL standings at 7-1. Brady Quinn hit two free throws to tie the game, then he buried a basket to make it 37-35 Acalanes with a minute remaining in the contest. Maddox Malm, a 6-foot-6 senior, took over after that, sinking three clutch free throws. Clayton Valley led 31-28 going to the fourth quarter. The Ugly Eagles are 4-3 in the DAL and 13-10 overall. Acalanes is 17-5 in all games.

Cornerstone Christian 58, Athenian 46

The Cougars won for the 15th time in their last 16 games. Ben Lukacs scored 12 points in the winning effort and Haikeem Shaw pulled down seven rebounds. Marcus Wagner made his presence felt on defense with three steals. Cornerstone Christian is 21-3 in all games and 8-0 in the Bay Counties East. Dario Beltramo had 17 points for Athenian and Teni Salako added 14. Athenian is 9-10 overall and 2-6 in the Bay Counties East. 

Girls basketball

No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 78, No. 14 Valley Christian 32

The Monarchs improved to 7-0 in the WCAL and 16-3 overall, placing four players in double figures. Sophomore Ze’Ni led Mitty with 15 points. Devin Cosgriff had 14, Maliya Hunter had 11 and Tiera McCarthy scored 10. All four double-figure scorers will be back next season. Hunter is a 6-foot-2 freshman. Mia Kagita had 11 points for Valley Christian. The game was never close. Mitty led 52-16 at halftime. In a bit of an oddity, the visiting Warriors (13-6, 2-5) scored eight points in all four quarters. 

No. 9 St. Francis 71, Presentation 17

The Lancers sank 11 3-pointers in the runaway win. Sophie Holmes had 11 points and Kylie Brown scored 10. Paige Spencer and Grace Curley each had nine points as St. Francis improved to 15-4 overall and 4-3 in the WCAL. Presentation dropped to 4-14 and 0-7.

No. 18 Northgate 61, Ygnacio Valley 47

Northgate won the game, but what a performance by Ygnacio Valley’s Sa’rye Starks! The 5-foot-6 senior poured in 43 points, had 15 steals and grabbed 10 rebounds. Her 43 points came on 13 2-point baskets, 11 free throws and two 3-pointers. Despite Stark’s performance, the Wolves couldn’t stay with Northgate in the third and fourth quarters, when they were outscored 35-22. The Broncos improved to 18-5 overall and 8-1 in the DAL. Hana Neuman led Northgate with 20 points and Samantha Myhr had 14. Sophomore Maddison Dardelich had 15 rebounds. Ygnacio slipped to 4-10 and 1-6.

Christopher 54, No. 20 Evergreen Valley 49

Ember Navarro’s three-point play with a minute left on the clock turned out to be the difference for host Christopher. The game was close throughout between the top two teams in the BVAL Mt. Hamilton. Christopher held a three-point lead going to the fourth quarter. Evergreen Valley suffered its first loss in league play and fell to 7-1. EV is 16-4 in all games. Christopher is 6-2 in league, 15-3 overall. Christopher center Maddy Tamone had 16 points and Navarro added nine. Aastha Bhagat scored 16 in a losing cause.

Westmont 47, Piedmont Hills 42

The Warriors rallied from a four-point halftime deficit and in the process grabbed a share of first place in the tight BVAL Santa Teresa race. Westmont, Santa Teresa and Silver Creek all have 4-2 league records. Leigh is one game behind. A 22-13 second-half scoring edge proved to be the difference for Westmont. Lara Macian had 17 points for the Warriors, including five 3-point baskets. Naviya Popli had 14 points. Tayla Lee scored 19 points for Piedmont Hills.

Santa Teresa 48, Leigh 39

The Saints trailed 33-31 entering the fourth period, but a 17-6 scoring edge took care of business for one of the co-leaders in the BVAL Santa Teresa race. Dahlia Daboul 18 points for the winners. Mia Hwang contributed 11 for Santa Teresa. The Saints improved to 12-7 on the season. Leigh is 8-11.
