Purported landlord shot to death in Hayward

HAYWARD — A 68-year-old man purported to be a landlord died after being shot Sunday, and investigators arrested another man on suspicion of first-degree murder, authorities said.

Authorities did not identify the dead man immediately, pending the notification of relatives and the status of the investigation.

In a statement, police said they arrested 43-year-old Larry Jose Lopez on suspicion of first-degree murder. Authorities held him in custody without bail Monday at Santa Rita Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.

Police said officers found the victim down when they arrived to the 500 block of Ramos Avenue about 9:10 a.m. Medical personnel called to the scene pronounced the man dead.

A person who called dispatchers told them that her landlord had been the shooting victim, police said. The homicide investigation is the first of 2025 for Hayward police. They investigated 14 in 2024.
