The San Francisco-Marin Food Bank has disclosed a data breach affecting more than 60,000 people.
The nonprofit organization issued notices last week about the hack, which it said it discovered last May. It said it engaged specialists to help investigate the system intrusion.
“Our investigation determined that certain information stored on our network was accessed by an unauthorized party between May 10, 2024, and May 30, 2024,” the organization said in a notice.

The food bank said the information could include Social Security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, financial card information, medical information, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers and other sensitive data.
The organization said it has “notified and worked with law enforcement, changed network passwords and reviewed our policies and procedures. In an abundance of caution, we are providing individuals access to free credit monitoring and identity protection services.”
The nonprofit set up an information line at 833-799-4195. The line is available from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
The food bank noted that free credit reports are available once a year from the TransUnion, Experian and Equifax credit reporting bureaus. They can be ordered from the agencies directly or online at annualcreditreport.com.
“These types of incidents are becoming more and more common, and it’s extremely unfortunate this has happened,” said Michael McAlpin, the director of marketing and communications.
McAlpin did not say how many people might be affected, but a notification filed with the state government in Maine says the breach affected 60,180 people overall. The hack is not listed at the California Attorney General’s Office data breach security website.
The food bank has not said whether the organization or donors have had financial losses as a result of the breach.
The nonprofit reported about $185.5 million in income for the 2023-24 fiscal year, including more than $40 million in donations and nearly $93 million in non-monetary contributions. Its annual report said it had about 25,000 donors.
The organization said it distributed almost 67 million pounds of food, mostly through its network of pantries, to about 53,000 households a week in the two counties. It is based in San Francisco and has a facility on Kerner Boulevard in San Rafael.
