Officials expect Pittsburg’s first multipurpose field complex to attract tournaments, boost economy

PITTSBURG — The now-defunct Delta View Golf Course will soon be transformed into a multisport field complex in an effort to boost recreational activities and sports tourism in Pittsburg.

Construction of the Pittsburg Premier Fields, the city’s first multipurpose sports site that will be located at the intersection of West Leland Road and John Henry Johnson Parkway, kicked off in January and is expected to be completed by this fall.

The project, which will be completed in phases, will have seven multipurpose fields, one track and field course, expanded parking facilities, and a plaza.

Construction is currently ongoing for the first phase. It includes a multipurpose field parallel to West Leland Road, a parking lot, a multipurpose interim field that can be used for soccer and lacrosse, and a new traffic signal across the city’s Dream Courts project.

The Dream Courts project, a 45,000-square-foot multicourt sports complex for basketball and volleyball, has been cited as the largest indoor recreational gymnasium in the region. It is a partnership between the city and Discovery Homes.

Pittsburg Mayor Jelani Killings said residents have always wanted more diverse recreational activities that benefit everyone, especially youth.

Killings said the city council has made a strong commitment to “invest in our youth” and provide economic growth opportunities in the city.

“When you’re looking at this project, along with across the street at Dream Courts, nearly $7 million (is) being invested into our youth and our community to let them know that they deserve these types of facilities,” said Killings at the groundbreaking ceremony of Pittsburg Premier Fields late last month. “(It is) also to let the region know that we’re open and that Pittsburg is a place where they can come, where we can have tournaments, where people can visit our local economy, support our local restaurants.”

Killings hoped that both the Pittsburg Premier Fields and Dream Courts projects would send a signal to local businesses that the city is serious about helping to drive more foot traffic in the community, attracting both locals and tourists to visit Pittsburg for recreational activities.

The mayor thanked city staff and fellow councilmembers for playing a pivotal role in ensuring this vision came to reality by prioritizing the projects and identifying funding for them.

The city tapped into various sources to fund the Pittsburg Premier Fields project, including the American Rescue Plan Act fund, park dedication fees, and local Measure M sales taxes.

Killings also thanked the residents for being patient with the city as the 175-acre golf course, which was shut down in 2018, is finally being repurposed for better use.

The project will also provide additional pathways that connect to the existing walking trail available at the golf course to cater to residents who seek more passive recreational activities. The pedestrian trails circling the facility will enable residents to enjoy scenic hill views from the golf course.

The remaining portion of the former golf course will be used for Pittsburg Technology Park, a technology hub and data center acquired by AVAIO.
