Staying FireSafe with NASA
In a collaboration announced on Feb. 14, the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council and NASA Ames Research Center will use satellite imagery to identify vegetation that is most at risk of escalating wildfires.
The collaboration will allow the identification of overgrown vegetation that could contribute to wildfires during high winds, the amount of toxic gases emitted from burning wildlands and residential structures and more.
“By partnering with NASA Ames Research Center, we will incorporate their models in our vegetation and fuels analysis on new projects so that this data can be incorporated into grant applications, providing a new lens of analysis that we hope can increase our likelihood of securing future awards,” FireSafe Council CEO Seth Schalet said in a release.
Dedicated to music
The San Jose Wind Symphony is having a “Fiesta” on Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m. at the McAfee Performing Arts Center in Saratoga.
Artistic director Dr. David Vickerman will conduct the symphony in works by Mexican composers Silvestre Revueltas, Nubia Jaime-Donjuan, Genaro Codina and Juan Pablo Contreras. The concert features Mariachi San José, a performance ensemble in the School of Music at San José State University directed by Dr. José R. Torres-Ramos.
Tickets are $20-$25 at http://www.sjws.org. Admission is free for children and students, but online registration is required.
A healthy effort
Saratoga High School student Jerry Chang is among 18 students from Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) who qualified for state competition at the HOSA-Future Health Professionals regional competition last month.
HOSA, which stands for Health Occupations Students of America, is an internationally recognized student-led organization—one of two career and technical student organizations at SVCTE. HOSA’s competitive events provide a platform for students to expand their expertise and gain hands-on experience.
Chang will showcase his knowledge of pharmacy science at the state competition, set for March 27-29 in Sacramento.
