Man goes missing after leaping into ocean north of Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ – A man went missing after he jumped from a cliff into the ocean Tuesday north of Santa Cruz, authorities said.

The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. at Wilder Ranch State Park, according to the Santa Cruz Fire Department. Witnesses said the man tried to swim back to shore after leaping into the water, but he was prevented by strong currents and waves.

Agencies including the U.S. Coast Guard, California State Parks and Cal Fire searched for the man, but he had not been found as of 3:45 p.m., the fire department said.

The man was not publicly identified Tuesday.
