Woman critically burned after tent catches fire in East Oakland homeless encampment

OAKLAND — A 40-year-old woman was hospitalized with severe burns Tuesday after her tent caught fire in an East Oakland homeless encampment, authorities said.

The woman was taken to St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco with second-degree and third-degree burns after the blaze, which happened just before 2 p.m. near 45th Avenue and Bond Street, according to Oakland Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt.

She was listed in critical condition a few hours after the fire, according to the Oakland Police Department.

According to initial reports, the woman’s tent appeared to catch fire, and she may have gone back into it to gather her belongings, Hunt said.
