Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) boys Athlete of the Week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances from May 6-11.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Vote as many times as you’d like until then without using bots or any other artificial methods of voting.

Votes by email and after 5 p.m. Wednesday are not counted.

Winners are announced each Friday online and in the print edition of the Mercury News and East Bay Times sports sections.

Candidates for future Athlete of the Week polls can be nominated at highschools@bayareanewsgroup.com.

We accept nominations until 11 a.m. each Monday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Tyler Alden, Valley Christian volleyball: Alden, a senior, had 19 kills, three blocks and two aces in the Warriors’ 3-1 win over Santa Cruz in the Central Coast Section Open Division championship. 

Matthew Castillo, Prospect baseball: The senior third baseman totaled six hits and eight RBIs in two wins against Gunderson. Castillo is batting .511 and has an OPS of 1.470 this season.

Henry Harding, Palo Alto baseball: Harding pitched a no-hitter and struck out eight batters in a 3-0 win over Wilcox. Palo Alto finished the regular season 15-12, 10-4. 

Edward Huang, American swimming: Huang took second in the 100-yard backstroke at the CIF state swim championships, touching the wall in 47.55.

Tanishk Konduri, Harker tennis: Konduri, a freshman, went undefeated at the Central Coast Section team tournament and led Harker to its first ever CCS semifinal berth. 

Cole Leschak, Pittsburg baseball: The senior was 2 for 3 and had two RBIs in the Pirates 6-1 win over Liberty in the Bay Valley Athletic League tournament championship game. Pittsburg will play Heritage in the first round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs on Tuesday.

Enrique Mendez, James Lick baseball: Mendez had an RBI double and an RBI triple in James Lick’s 13-2 win over Independence. Mendez led James Lick to its first league title since 1971.

Bay Area News Group boys athlete of the week: Daniel Saavedra, Lincoln

Jamal Perry, San Leandro track and field: Perry, a senior, took first place in the 100-meter race with a time of 10.77 at the North Coast Section Bayshore Area Championships.

Tyler Porter, Bellarmine swimming: Porter took second place in the 50 freestyle at the CIF state swim championships, finishing in 20.34. 

Arrin Sagiraju, Dougherty Valley track and field: The junior finished the 800-meter run in 1:56.15 at the NCS Tri-Valley Area Championships.

Jake Sekany, Granada baseball: Sekany struck out 14 batters and pitched a complete game in Granada’s 6-4 win over San Ramon Valley in the East Bay Athletic League tournament championship. Granada finished the year 25-1, 12-1 and received the No. 1 seed in the NCS Division playoffs.
