OAKLAND — A San Leandro man has been charged with being a felon in possession of guns allegedly found in a May 1 raid on his home by the ATF, court records show.
Kenyetta Roberson was charged earlier this month with a single federal offense. The criminal complaint doesn’t say why the ATF received authorization to search his San Leandro residence, but according to court papers filed by federal prosecutors, Roberson was shot in the legs outside a liquor store on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland last October. He fired back at his assailant, records show.

Prosecutors described the shooting in an unsuccessful motion to keep Roberson in custody while the case is pending, saying they believed he was possessing the three pistols to retaliate against the man who shot him in the legs. But they noted that during an interview with law enforcement, Roberson indicated he wanted them for self-defense and added, “I’m not trying to kill nobody.”
Roberson told authorities he had to relearn how to walk and still had metal rods in his legs due to surgery from the shooting, authorities said. He was released May 9 on a $25,000 unsecured bond, via a court order by U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna Ryu, court records show. His next court hearing has been set for late June.
