Housing Element adopted
A month after receiving the approval letter from the state’s Housing and Community Development Department (HCD), the Cupertino City Council on May 14 adopted the 2023-2031 Housing Element.
The Housing Element is required by state law to be updated every eight years to determine the city’s housing needs, identify constraints to housing development, identify policies to encourage the development of housing and demonstrate that the city has housing sites available to accommodate its allocation of new housing across a range of income levels during the eight years covered by the document. The HCD determined that Cupertino’s housing allocation is 4,588 new housing units.
Since receiving HCD’s letter, the city has held meetings with the Housing and Planning Commissions and the city council to certify the Housing Element. The next step is the rezoning process, which is expected to be completed in July. At that point, the final draft of the Housing Element will be submitted to HCD for certification.
Neighborhood preparedness
Cupertino residents can learn what to do in case of an emergency a free class presented by the city’s Office of Emergency Management on Thursday, May 30, 7-9 p.m. Participants can learn what to have in place to have a better outcome, and what neighbors can do to check on each other.

Teen commissioners sought
Cupertino teens are encouraged to apply for five vacancies on the city’s teen commission. Applications may be submitted via cupertino.org/vacancies.
The application deadline is Thursday, May 30, at 4:30 p.m. The city council will conduct interviews beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27.
