Athletics walk it off with five-run 11th inning against Rockies

OAKLAND — Pinch-hitter Tyler Soderstrom walked on four pitches with the bases loaded to cap a five-run rally in the bottom of the 11th inning Wednesday as the Athletics stunned the Colorado Rockies, 10-9, at the Coliseum.

Soderstrom was hitting for Daz Cameron, who had homered to tie the game in the ninth in his A’s debut. The Athletics scored all their runs from the seventh inning on in a game they trailed 4-0. They even survived Colorado getting to Mason Miller in the 10th and 11th innings.

Trailing 9-5 going into the bottom of the 11th, the Athletics tied the score against reliever Matt Koch without recording an out as Max Schuemann doubled home Cameron, the free runner, Abraham Toro singled in a run and J.J. Bleday homered to tie the score.

The Rockies built their four-run lead by getting a run against Miller in the 11th. Jake Cave hit an RBI single and Brenton Doyle added an infield single that scored a runner from third with two out before Mark Kotsay brought in Brandon Bielek. Bielek promptly gave up a two-run double to Brendan Rodgers.

Miller gave up three hits and five runs, two of them earned, in 1 2/3 innings. He walked one intentionally and struck out two. Miller had not given up a run in his previous 15 appearances.

J.D. Davis hit a two-run home run in the eighth for the A’s, with newcomer Cameron homering to lead off the ninth and tie the game 4-4. It was the third home run of the season for Davis. Bleday’s home run in extras was his seventh overall.

In the bottom of the 10th, Zack Gelof singled home free runner Seth Brown against Justin Lawrence to tie the score 5-5. The Athletics had two runners aboard with one out and a chance to win, but Cameron grounded into a double play to send it to the 11th.

Colorado scored in the 10th against Miller on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Beck. It brought home free runner Brendan Rodgers, who was singled to third by Kris Bryant.

The Athletics tied it in the ninth when Cameron took Colorado closer Jalen Beeks deep. Max Schuemann followed with a single, but the Rockies got out of the inning without further damage when Lawrence retired Seth Brown on a pop up to second.

Starter Joey Estes went seven innings before an announced crowd of 6,886, giving up four hits and four earned runs with no walks and six strikeouts. He threw 93 pitches, 73 of which were strikes, bouncing back nicely from an 8-1 loss in Houston where he gave up eight earned runs and walked four in 3 2/3 innings.

Ryan Feltner threw six shutout innings for Colorado, giving up four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The A’s broke through in the seventh for a run against Victor Vodnik on Schuemann’s run-scoring single, but Abraham Toro grounded into a double play to prevent a larger uprising.

Davis got the A’s within a run in the eighth with a two-run home run, his fourth, against Tyler McKinley.

Estes gave up two runs in the first and two in the sixth but did some good things in between, particularly in retiring the side in the fourth and fifth innings on a combined 17 pitches.

In the sixth, Ezequiel Tovar opened with a double and was singled to third by Jake Cave. Ryan McMahon was next, and his pop fly to shallow right fell to the grass. Tovar scored, and Cave was forced at second. McMahon ended up scoring on a single by Jacob Stallings.

In the first, Tovar doubled to lead off the game and Estes also gave up doubles to Elhuris Montero and Brenton Doyle. Doyle’s drove in a run, with the first run scoring when J.J. Bleday threw errantly after a line out to center, allowing Tovar to score.

Scott Alexander took over Estes in the seventh inning.

Up next are three games at the Coliseum against Houston, which swept the A’s in four games on their disastrous road trip. The Astros outscored Oakland 22-4 in the series.
